Exciting Video Conference Between USA & Guatemala
Thursday, June 23, 2011 11:20 AM

This note came in after a very successful video conference between this USA class and their partner class in Guatemala. The note is to Miguel Barreto (pictured) from Eleanor Schuster, Library Media Specialist at the Suffern Middle School.
"Shyness disappeared as Miguel put both sides at ease with gentle humor and skillful translation. The conversations among young people around the world are imperative. The knowledge gained about other cultures, our similarities and differences, the importance and impact of the physical environment, basic geography and an awareness that although there are many different ways of life, we all share the same smiles and feelings, this is vital for deep understanding and respect throughout the world."
For more information and photographs from the video conference, here is the link to the Suffern Middle School blog: http://suffernvideoconferencing.org/
Farewell to one of the best!

We wish to thank Liz Strubbe, a partner teacher from the Cesar A. Batalla School in Bridgeport, CT for all her extraordinary efforts in making our Artlink programs so successful.
Creative Connections Program Director, Sudha Sankar said, “Liz’s classroom presents global education at its best, year after year. She has also enriched her international partner’s classrooms every time!”
This beautiful picture from Japan was created from Liz's international partner class this year. The artist is Rina T. of the Seshyu Middlie School in Japan.
We recently received these kind words from Liz, "Thank you. I will miss the "connection". What a wonderful experience it was! Over the years, I learned so much about other cultures and people. It was truly a great experience for both my students and myself."
We wish Liz every happiness in all her future endeavors.

"It has been a great opportunity working with Creative Connections to provide schools here in Kenya with a chance to interact, learn and appreciate cultural diversity. Such an experience is quite invaluable in modeling young people to become global citizens. Thanks for the good work you do."

We are excited to announce our 2011-2012 Artlink theme -
“Putting Myself in the Picture”
We will be asking the students in our programs to illustrate an aspect of their culture that is particularly meaningful, one that expresses a cultural value or belief that they want to share.
The piece could feature an activity that the student feels is unique or special to their culture, one that takes place once in a lifetime, or once a year, or even once a day. It could illustrate something they are proud of or something in their society that they are concerned about.
Whatever aspect the student chooses, we ask that they place themselves somewhere in their art piece. The student can appear as an active participant in, or as a spectator of, the activity or scene they are depicting. The student can choose to include all of themselves, or just one part (a head, an arm, etc.) They will be asked to identify where they appear on the artist description that will accompany their art piece.

Thank you from a USA partner

This is just in from Nita Hurley, one of our USA partner teachers, from the Discovery Montessori School in Jacksonville, FL:
"I just wanted to take a moment to send a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped (at Creative Connections) to make our art exchange happen. I think it was a profound experience for not only the students but also for the teachers involved. I think the children really enjoyed having the opportunity to see their artwork in the hands of students in Guatemala. It was truly an inspiring experience for us to watch the students interact with students using the incredible technology which we are privileged to have."
